Pulling from early ideas of psychogeography, this series of encounters suggests a new way of moving about the urban landscape. A moving meditation which presents an alternative to the mindless transition from point A to point B, the theory of drift suggests an attunement to your surroundings; an awareness to the atmosphere of ‘place’ and your experience moving within it.

Signs are placed throughout Providence, Rhode Island and are intended to disrupt the efficiencies of modern life to discover new ways of experiencing the city and it’s underlying structure. Hidden gems will be found. New thoughts will arise. Chance encounters will present themselves.

Each sign contains a QR code that, when scanned takes the viewer to a website which describes the project and system of encounters.

The system was then used as an Alleycat race, where cyclists scanned the QR code to reveal the system of signage checkpoints. Racers then had to determine their most efficient route between the 13 checkpoints around the city using their own familiarity with the streets and trails of Providence.
