Butterfly Effect

Immersive & interactive environment
Responsive graphics and sound (using TouchDesigner)
Projection mapping onto 8’x5’ nylon shades (hand-sewn)
Shredded global climate agreements
Regional rocks

Through the introduction of technology and the pace of industrialization, we have found ourselves often out of sync with our natural environment. As we continue at an increasingly rapid pace of life, the climate is shifting at a progressively unnatural rate, causing shifts and mismatches in previously reliable phenological cycles (the flowering of cherry blossoms, the ripening of fruit, the migration of birds, and the timing and availability of food sources along the ecological food chain).

Butterfly Effect attempts to bring these mismatches to the surface, illuminating the impact of our presence and the radiating effects of our intervention. Canopy shades are placed throughout the space like trees in a wild forest, offering immersive views from various perspectives. In its state of equilibrium, the space is ambient and calm. As the audience moves about, responsive graphic content is gradually disrupted, providing a sense of agitation, and thereby encouraging the audience to re-attune themselves to their environment and a slower, more natural pace.

︎︎︎ A stack of global climate agreements is displayed on a pedestal at the entry of the installation and bookmarked to reveal to visitors the content that is shredded and ‘trampled’ as users occupy and agitate the installation space.
